Liz Johnson
Liz Johnson (25/04/1964, UK) Her highly diverse music ranges from luscious vocal works to delicately layered and complex chamber music, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and performed throughout the UK and around the world. Her Moon Incantations for children’s choir reached the final of the British Composer Awards in 2003. Her third string quartet, Intricate Web, was selected to open Kings Place (London) by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in 2008, performed by the Brodsky Quartet. Recent premieres include Sundances for choir, Inflorescence for soprano saxophone and piano and Forty-Something premiered by the Fitzwilliam Quartet in celebration of their fortieth anniversary.
Ljiljana Jovanović
(Belgrade, 15th June, 1966) started her piano and music theory training at the age of seven. She studied composition in Montenegro and Croatia with Željko Brkanović, where she also gained her B. Ma. In 1989 she moved to Stuttgart to follow courses in musique concrète at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst with Urlich Süße. She continued at the Rheinische Musik Hochschule in Cologne with Mauricio Kagel, and also studied musicology, Slavic philology and philosophy at Cologne University. In 2002, she finished her graduate studies in interdisciplinary theatre at Towson University in Maryland where she received the College Graduate Education and Research Fellowship for 2001 and 2002. Her compositions, new music projects, sound designs and texts have been performed and broadcast in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Germany, Holland, England, Portugal, France, Canada and the United States. She continues to pursue diverse artistic interests as a composer, sound designer, musical director and educator in the Baltimore and Washington area. She received the Meet the Composer Grant for 2004, and has been a member of the Baltimore Composers Forum since 2002. Her best known works are: Two movements, for 19 stings, Etudes, for Three Players and a Wind Septet, Sonata, for the Piano, String quartet Chromatic Impressions, and Wind Quintet Diptych.
Ljubinka Jokic
(born in Banja Luka, Bosnia, and resident in Austria). She first took accordion lessons at the age of seven; however she did not feel especially well behind the gigantic instrument with the 120 basses and thus switched to electric guitar. Before emigrating to Vienna in 1992 to study at the Schubert Conservatory, she had performed in all the bars in Banja Luka with a colorful repertoire that featured her models Vlatko Stefanovski, Miroslav Tadic and Theodosii Spassov prominently.
With her band YOK! Ljubinka Jokic, dresses traditional songs, gypsy songs and Yugo-pop-rock classics from the 70s and 80s in modern sound. Her music is a mixture of earthy percussion, pulsating bass line, virtuoso electric violin playing and raw guitar riffs. And above all soars the emotion –laden voice of Ljubinka Jokic. She sings, aspirates and screams, and the tones that she can no longer produce with her voice she wrenches from her guitar.
