Intervista con VIVIENNE OLIVE

Where were you born and educated?

I was born in London, UK. Educated at Trinity College of Music, London, York University, Composition Studies with Franco Donatoni (Milano), Roman Haubenstock-Ramati (Vienna), Klaus Huber (Freiburg). Cembalo with Valda Aveling (London and Stanislav Heller (Freiburg).

What kind of music do you compose and create?

The emphasis is on "serious" music, ranging from works for solo to orchestral and opera. Please see my list of works on my website: www.vivienne-olive.de

Did you face any obstacles in your carrier ? What kind of obstacles?

Not really, apart from Franco Donatoni not taking me seriously as a composer and Edition Modern, Munich who thought it was risky taking on a woman composer. This is however a long time ago (in the 1970's).

What do you think could be done to help women working in music business?

Women should definitely be promoted more as far as performances are concerned (festivals etc.). I recently looked at the programme for the coming year of the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra: not one single woman composer is represented!
