Donne in Musica (Women in Music - a term created
by Patricia Adkins Chiti in 1975) made its debut on the Italian
and international music scene in 1978 and quickly gained a
reputation as a grass roots movement dedicated to the promotion
and presentation of music written by women. The first
"Donne in Music Festivals" in Rome, Venice and Naples
at the end of the seventies were followed in 1982 by the first
book with the sane name. In 1996, the international Women in
Music Foundation came into being as a showcase and advocate for
a large range of styles and genres of music from every country
and in all times.
The Adkins Chiti: Women in Music Foundation is a
member of the International Music Council of UNESCO, the
European Music Council, working directly with the European
Commission and Culture Ministries in Italy, Europe, Asia and
Latin America. Patricia Chiti, former Italian State Commissioner
for Equal Opportunities, is consultant on Equal Opportunities in
the arts and culture for many European governments and EUC
projects and a member of a Vatican Commission for the women
patron saints of Europe. An application has been made to the
United Nations for consultant status within the domains of
culture, women and education.
Donne in Musica is recognised world wide for the
diversity of history-making music projects at national and
international levels and is a name for everything that is new in
music: festivals, concert series, symposiums, exbitions,
exciting events, bold presentations of new works and unusual
musicological research…Donne in Musica explores and invents
new horizons of contemporary performance. The Foundation
presented the largest music project in the Millennium and
Jubilee year with the Vatican Offical Seal - 100 concerts of
sacred music by women; it has an ongoing working relationship
with the Italian Ministry of Culture, Foreign Ministry, Equal
Opportunities Ministry and with the Lazio Region, City Council
of Rome and many cities in the European Union. It has created
and produced radio and television programmes for international
networks and in the last 6 years has presented over 1,000 works
by women composers living and working in 50 countries. Its
regular concert series "ControCAnto" commissions more
than 18 new works each year.
We promote the music composed by women:
The document known as the "Declaration of the Fiuggi"
is a mission statement undersigned by all the members of the
Women in Music Network.. The Foundation lobbies on behalf of
women musicians with international institutions and Cultural
Ministries worldwide to obtain recognition for women's
achievements in music, culture and development and to ensure
their participation in the formulation and implementation of
cultural policies at all levels and their access to
decision-making positions within the cultural world. It is
important to preserve, promote, sustain, and safeguard the
artistic rights of women artists and creators within all
communities.
