Adkins Chiti: Women in Music Foundation

Donne in Musica (Women in Music – a term created by Patricia Adkins Chiti in 1975) made its debut on the Italian and international music scene in 1978 and quickly gained a reputation as an organisation dedicated to the promotion and presentation of music written by women. The first “Donne in Music Festivals” in Rome, Venice and Naples, were produced at the end of the seventies, followed in 1982 by the book “Donne in Musica”. Under the artistic direction of Patricia Adkins Chiti, internationally renowned musician and musicologist, and in collaboration with the City of Fiuggi, in 1996 the international Women in Music Foundation was created and continues to be a showcase and advocate for a large range of styles and genres of music from every country and in all times. Donne in Musica is recognised world wide for the diversity of history-making music projects at national and international levels and is a name for everything that is new in music, exciting events, bold presentations of new works and unusual musicological research…Donne in Musica explores and invents new horizons of contemporary performance.

We promote the music composed by women :
We organize festivals, concert series, symposiums, exbitions. With the Official Seal of the Jubilee we presented the largest music project in the Millennium and Jubilee year – over 100 concerts of sacred music by women. We have a long standing relationship with the Lazio Region, the City Council and Artistic Superintendant of Rome and with many cities in the European Union. The Foundation has created and produced radio and television programmes for international networks and in the last 6 years alone has presented more than 1,000 works by women composers living and working in 54 countries.
The document known worldwide as the “Declaration of the Fiuggi 1996” sets out our mission statement and is undersigned by all the members of our Network..
We lobby on behalf of women musicians with Italian State institutions, the European Comunity, European Music Council, European Commission, UNESCO and Cultural Ministries worldwide to obtain recognition for women’s achievements in music, culture and development and to ensure their participation in the formulation and implementation of cultural policies at all levels and their access to decision-making positions within the cultural world. It is important to preserve, promote, sustain, and safeguard the artistic rights of women artists and creators within all communities.
The Women in Music Foundation has applied to the United Nations for consultant status within the domains of culture (music), women and education (music).

The Women in Music Network:
The Adkins Chiti: Women in Music Foundation is a member of the International Music Council of UNESCO, the European Music Council, and works directly with the European Commission and Culture Ministries in Italy, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
